Just when you thought they couldn’t possibly make another Spider-Man movie, along comes Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. And if you guessed that this latest outing was going to be the kiss of death for the two-decade old franchise rebooted in 2002 with Tobey Maguire in the title role, then guess again.
Don’t be swayed by the fact that Andrew Garfield or Tom Holland aren’t around to step into Spidey’s shoes because this animated feature is packed with so much heart and smarts that critics and fans alike have gone so far to label it the best Spider-Man film to date.
Brought to life by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the same kick ass team behind 2014’s surprise sleeper hit The Lego Movie, Spider-Verse masterfully pays homage to both the motion pictures that preceded it and the pages of Marvel where our web-slinging hero originated.
This could well be the evolution of film as we know it because the visual style on display here is truly a triumph not just in animation, but also in storytelling courtesy of fresh new tools and devices that work on every level.
Add to that the voice talents of a seemingly random but undisputedly awesome collection of the finest character actors such as Liev Schreiber, Nicolas Cage, and Lily Tomlin as beloved Aunt May, and you just might agree with the general consensus that Spider-Man truly in in his best form since as far back as 19-forgotten.
