The following is a review of the movie “Rampage”
by Marc Primo.
Dwayne Johnson has returned with an early summer’s popcorn flick, Rampage, directed by Brad Peyton, with whom he has an established partnership.
Co-starring Naomie Harris, the movie is based on the video game series by Midway Games that first came out in 1986, and its basic premise was to save large cities from humans who have mutated into giant animal monsters. The movie stays true to that theme with some variations; the classic trio of George, Lizzie and Ralph are featured but as mutated animals instead of mutated humans. This does remove a level of complexity from the movie, but that does not hurt the overall entertainment value of the picture too much.
The Rock plays Davis Okoye, a primatologist – and a former US Army Special Forces member – to Harris’ geneticist Dr. Kate Caldwell, and the two try to figure out how to stop the rogue animals that have come to terrorize the city of Chicago. Okoye’s friendship with the gorilla George is one of the central themes of the movie, with the primatologist not wanting to give up on his generically altered friend. Overall, The Rock is as charismatic as ever, and while you may not be getting an elaborate backstory or deep character-interaction, there is over-the-top action with a big heart which keeps the movie from dragging and keeps you entertained.
If you love animals or you are a fan of the original video game, give this one a go, just don’t expect realistic action scenes and mind-bending intrigue.
